Frederick County United Methodist Habitat Build (FCUM) 2005
Habitat houses are special places for a special reason: They are built with the love of volunteer partners who supply the labor, donor partners (our congregation and local businesses) whose financial help make these houses possible and affordable, and the partner family (the family who will eventually own the home) who contributes a minimum of 300 hours of “sweat equity” in the construction of their own house.
The 2005 Habitat home built by Frederick United Methodist churches, Mount St. Mary's students, and Gettysburg College students is near completion. Sara Lee and her four sons, the family selected by Habitat for Humanity to receive the home, should be enjoying the Thanksgiving holiday at their new address.
Many local businesses donated materials or offered them at discount prices. The United Methodist churches in Frederick County provided money as they were able. Church members worked diligently Saturday after Saturday to construct this home. Several church youth groups participated in fundraising activities to help cover the cost of materials. MUMC's youth group participated in Volunteer Frederick's Operation Big Sweep along with youth groups from Asbury UMC and Trinity(Frederick) UMC and as a result earned $1200 toward this very important activity. Bob Clayton, Dick Kishimoto, and Matthew Protos hung cabinets and did finishing carpentry work.
This type of undertaking requires a lot of hard work by many volunteers. Anyone participating will tell you that it is very rewarding. I certainly appreciate those in our church who gave of their time and talents to make this home a dream come true for another family in Frederick County.
The Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 18,sup>th in Emmitsburg. Everyone is invited to attend.
