A Great Time to be the Church

In many respects, we live in an unprecedented age. The advancements of modern technology have afforded means of communication, transportation, and work productivity which were the raw materials of science fiction stories a few decades ago. Without a doubt, the world is a fast moving place, changing from moment to moment, offering continuous opportunities and constant challenges. In the midst of this whirlwind is humankind, caught somewhere between the struggle for fulfillment and the search for meaning. Often, however, these struggles and searches take place in isolation. In many ways, we have become a singular society. People spend significant portions of their days commuting alone in cars and conversing with computer screens. Somehow, despite all our newfound ability to communicate, we have become very efficient at functioning alone. Perhaps more than ever, people need the assurance of knowing that they are loved by God and by the community of God's people who understand and care for them. In essence, people need to know that the Good News of Jesus Christ is very much a reality for their lives throughout all the searches and struggles.

Yes, it is a great time to be the Church. But, it is also a challenging time as we, God's people, bring the Gospel of Christ to bear on human need. The following is a vision statement of a Church that seeks to rise to this challenge, to be the hands of God in a rapidly changing world:

We are a congregation called together by the grace of God in Jesus Christ for effective and faithful witness and service. We invite others to join us in our commitment to become a community of praise to God, a community of hospitality and care, a community of witness and service, a community of growth in faith, and a community which values the gifts of all persons.

My friends, this is the vision statement of the Church we serve, and it so beautifully reflects the spirit I have been privileged to share in since my family and I became part of the family of MUMC. This Church has been a blessing to its community for many years, providing a worship environment, child and adult education, child care, outreach, nurture, and many other programs which continue to flourish and grow year after year. Now, we are on the crest of a new vision, as the community expands and the people of God are called to work a plentiful harvest.

The Building Needs Assessment Committee (BNAC) has been working over the past months to compile information on the present Church programs, the projected community growth, and the factors to consider in exploring a transition to the next step. As a vital part of this process, congregational meetings will be held on December 3rd and December 10th from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at MUMC. During these meetings, we will be briefed on the studies conducted to date, and we will have the opportunity, in small group settings, to share ideas concerning possible courses of action for the days ahead. These meetings will provide the vehicle for you as members of our congregation to express your views on what programs and ministries are important to you, your families, and the greater community. We encourage you to come and to share your vision for the work of the Church.

Yes, it is a great time to be the Church, and all of us are ministers together in this great work which God has entrusted to our care. May we rise to the challenge to carry the Good News to a waiting world.

Grace and peace,

Joe
