"National Day of Prayer: America United Under God"
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
The National Day of Prayer is an annual event for Americans of all faiths to take time to pray for our nation and its leaders. National days of prayer have been called as early as 1775 with the first Continental Congress. As an annual event, the National Day of Prayer was established by federal law in 1952 when the United States Congress passed a joint resolution, which was signed by President Harry Truman. It was President Ronald Reagan who designated the first Thursday in May as the official National Day of prayer. PRAYER is America’s priceless heritage. The United States of America is the only country in the world with an official Day of Prayer, a time set aside for its people to seek God’s guidance and blessings on their nation. On the National Day of Prayer, local, state and federal observances are held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans in prayer for our country. The theme for this year’s event will be "America United Under God," and in the wake of the tragic events which struck our country on September 11, it seems most appropriate.
To help support this national focus on prayer, representatives from each of the area churches met to plan our community’s first Interdenominational Prayer Service sponsored by the Middletown Ministerium. Special speakers, inspiring music, and focused prayers for our nation will involve members from each of the participating churches.
The Prayer Group of Middletown United Methodist Church is privileged to invite you to attend this Interdenominational Prayer Service to be held in our
community on Thursday, May 2, 7:30 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church.
Let’s hope the Middletown community can match the estimated 1.5 million participants that attended last year’s observances!
